09/2002 - Italy, Delta of River Po

Week-end on the Delta of River Po with an itinerary that included a visit to Mesola , Estense Castle , Mesola, Castello Estense, Torre dell’Abate, Bosco di Santa Giustina, Alfonso II d’Este, Po di Gnocca, Lighthouse of Bacucco, Isola dell’ Amore (Island of Love), Sacca di Scardovari, Porto Tolle, Po della Tolle, Val Cavallina

We started our visit immediately after Mesola (dominated by the Estense castle of the end of 1500) precisely from Torre Abate (Abbot’s Tower) located in the wood of Santa Giustina . The tower, built in 1500 by Alfonso II d’Este , had the double function of water gate and defensive tower . The landscape that surrounds the tower is wonderful.
Then we continued along the river Po di Gnocca until we reached the sea.
We met the lighthouse of Bacucco in front of which there is the homonymous island also known as the “Isola dell’Amore” (Island of Love). Then we went up the river, always on the top of the embankment to enjoy the view, and in fact we admired the yellow expanses of rice fields whereas , on the bank of the river , there were numerous characteristic ” trawl-nets” of the fishermen.
We arrived at Gorino Sullam, we walked along a part of the embankment that surrounds the Sacca di Scardovari and we crossed the historical bridge of boats in the middle of which there is a beautiful religious niche full of flowers.

We followed the part of the river Po di Gnocca, overcame Porto Tolle and returned to Sacca di Scardovari along the road that encircles the Valcavallina .
There are beautiful landscapes , numerous fishing lodges and the boat trip to travel the lagoon was quite interesting. Even if it wasn’t the right season to watch the passage of the birds, however, we could see cormorants , little egrets , little hawks and the beautiful Grey Heron .
